It suits travellers who want depth rather than distance: one of the world's oldest winemaking regions, serious food traditions, and mountain roads that reward slow travel.

Wine Village

Areni

Areni is a small village in the dry red-rock landscape of Vayots Dzor, at the centre of Armenia's most important wine area and beside the cave where archaeologists found the world's oldest known winery. It is a base rather than a sight: a place to taste wine, visit the Areni-1 cave and reach the Noravank monastery at the end of its gorge, on the main road south towards Goris and Iran.

Best time

September and October are the obvious months. The grape harvest runs through this period, the wineries are at their most active, and the heat has dropped to something comfortable for the unshaded gorge at Noravank. May and June are the next best, with green hills before the summer dries them out. July and August are hot and the Noravank gorge in particular becomes uncomfortable in the middle of the day. Winter is quiet, several wineries reduce their visiting hours, and while Noravank in snow is striking, the gorge road can be difficult.

Recommended stay

One night, or none. Most travellers visit Areni as a stop between Yerevan and the south, or on a long day trip from the capital, and that works. One night makes sense if you want to taste properly without driving afterwards, which is the strongest single argument for staying, or if you are breaking the four-hour journey to Goris. There is not enough here for two nights unless you intend to visit wineries in depth.

Mountain Town01

Dilijan

Dilijan is a forested mountain town in Tavush, surrounded by a national park of over 240 square kilometres of beech and oak woodland, with a restored nineteenth-century craft street, walking trails into the hills, and the monasteries of Haghartsin and Goshavank in wooded settings nearby. It is Armenia's main slow-travel base and a complete climatic contrast to the dry plain around Yerevan.

Goris

Goris is a nineteenth-century planned town in southern Armenia, laid out on a grid in a bowl ringed by eroded rock pinnacles and honeycombed cave dwellings. It is the practical base for Tatev Monastery and the Wings of Tatev cable car, the abandoned cave village of Khndzoresk, and the wider Syunik region, and it exists on most itineraries because the distances down here make an overnight close to unavoidable.

Gyumri

Gyumri is Armenia's second city and its most architecturally distinctive, built from black and red volcanic tuff in a nineteenth-century merchant style that survives across more than a thousand buildings in the protected Kumayri district. It has a strong independent cultural identity, a reputation for humour and craft that Armenians take seriously, and a train link from Yerevan that makes it one of the easiest places in the country to reach without a car.

Lake Town04

Sevan

Sevan is the town and shoreline on Armenia's great high-altitude lake, sitting at roughly 1,900 metres where the water stays cold, the wind is constant and the light is unlike anywhere else in the country. It is the base for the Sevanavank monastery on its peninsula, the medieval khachkar field at Noratus, and a short but genuine summer swimming season.

Mountain Resort05

Tsaghkadzor

Tsaghkadzor is Armenia's main mountain resort, an hour north of Yerevan on the slopes of Mount Teghenis, with a lift system rising from around 1,966 metres to about 2,819 metres, the eleventh-century Kecharis monastery in the town centre, and a Soviet-era Olympic training complex that explains why a town this size has infrastructure this large. It is a genuine ski destination in winter and a cool-air escape with a ropeway and walking in summer, and the two experiences are almost entirely different.

Yerevan is Armenia's capital and the base for almost every trip to the country: a low-rise city built largely from pink volcanic tuff, with a dense cafe and dining culture, serious museums and manuscript collections, Soviet-modernist architecture, and monasteries, wine country and Lake Sevan all within a day's return drive.
