Jebel Jais as Ras Al Khaimah Tourism describes it

Ras Al Khaimah Tourism presents Jebel Jais as a mountain in the Hajar range with a viewing-deck park, hiking trails, the Jais Flight zipline, the Jais Sky Tour and a ropes course at Bear Grylls Explorers Camp. This guide sets out what each of those is according to the emirate's tourism pages, who those pages say runs them, and where the pages contradict each other.

Quick answer

Jebel Jais is a mountain of the Al Hajar range, which Ras Al Khaimah Tourism says straddles the UAE and Oman. The tourism authority's pages describe a road up the mountain, a Jais Viewing Deck Park with seven decks, six hiking trails totalling 16 km, and paid attractions: Jais Flight, which it calls the world's longest zipline at 2.83 km; the Jais Sky Tour, six ziplines across seven platforms; and the Jais Ropes Course at Bear Grylls Explorers Camp. Its Jebel Jais page says you can visit the mountain 'for free', but that there is 'a minimal fee to enter the Jais Viewing Deck Park' and tickets must be bought for adventures such as Jais Flight. XTOUR describes only what those pages say and does not state where the summit lies.

The short answer

Jebel Jais is a mountain of the Al Hajar range, and Ras Al Khaimah Tourism, the emirate's tourism authority, presents it as a road climbing into the range, a viewing-deck park, hiking trails and a cluster of paid adventures. Its Jebel Jais page says you can visit the mountain "for free", but that there is "a minimal fee to enter the Jais Viewing Deck Park" and that adventures such as the Jais Flight zipline need tickets.[1]

The authority calls Jebel Jais the highest mountain in the UAE and gives the peak as 1,934 metres. The same page says the Al Hajar range straddles two countries, running from Ras Al Khaimah to the Musandam Peninsula in Oman.[1] XTOUR repeats the height and the "highest" description as the authority's, and does not state where the summit itself lies.

XTOUR uses Ras Al Khaimah city only as a base to plan it from. Ras Al Khaimah is also the name of the emirate; XTOUR does not treat the mountain as part of the city, and has no travel time for the drive.

The road and the Jais Viewing Deck Park

The authority describes the drive as almost 30 km into the mountains on a road with hairpin bends and regular pull-ins, which it says is accessible by car, 4x4, motorbike and bicycle.[1][2] XTOUR has not verified road conditions or seasonal closures.

The Viewing Deck Park spans a ridge with seven viewing decks and 12 binoculars looking over the road, the valleys and, on the other side, the Arabian Gulf; it has two cafes, Puro Express and Muse Cafe, and is lit by solar power.[2] The page lists opening days and hours, which XTOUR does not restate.

The heights on the authority's pages do not fit together neatly. The deck page says the drive takes you to 1,250 metres and that the deck is "just shy of the summit", while the Jebel Jais page puts the peak at 1,934 metres and the Jais Flight zipline at 1,680 metres, a higher figure than the deck's.[1][2] XTOUR does not know how far the deck is from the summit.

Walking

The Jebel Jais page lists six designated trails with a cumulative length of 16 km, spread across the upper and lower parts of the mountain and described as suited to walkers of all experience levels.[1] It does not name the trails or their trailheads, and XTOUR has not read a trail map.

The paid attractions

Jais Flight. The authority calls it the world's longest zipline: 2.83 km, about three minutes, at 1,680 metres above sea level, at speeds up to 150 km/h.[3] The Jebel Jais page gives a range of 120 to 150 km/h for the same ride.[1] The Jais Flight page sets out who may ride: between 40 kg and 120 kg, at least 130 cm tall, no serious pre-existing medical conditions, an original passport or Emirates ID, athletic clothing with no dresses or skirts, and sturdy closed-toe shoes; riders under 18 who meet the limits need a parent or guardian and a signed waiver. It lists different flight times for winter and summer, says they may change in Ramadan or in harsh weather, and advises checking with the operator first.[3] XTOUR does not restate the page's timings or prices.

Jais Sky Tour. Six ziplines between 337 metres and over 1 km long, linking seven platforms at just over 1,600 metres, the highest a sky bridge 300 metres above the ground; the authority puts the whole tour at about two hours, at an average of 60 km/h, with riders seated in a harness. Its page lists fixed slots on set days and an online booking link.[4]

Jais Ropes Course. An obstacle course 10 metres above the ground at the entrance of Bear Grylls Explorers Camp; the authority's page says participants check in at the camp's information centre with their reservation details and are harnessed by the camp's team.[5]

The Jebel Jais page also names 1484 by Puro, a restaurant at 1,484 metres, and Bear Grylls Explorers Camp, which it says is run by Bear Grylls's team and teaches survival techniques.[1]

Who runs what: the pages disagree

The Jais Flight page says RAK Leisure, set up by the Government of Ras Al Khaimah in 2014 as a subsidiary of RAK Hospitality Holding, brought the zipline to the emirate and oversees Jais Sledder, Jais Via Ferrata, Jais Sky Room and the Jais Sky Tour as parts of the Jais Adventure Park; it also says RAK Leisure brought Bear Grylls Explorers Camp to the emirate and is responsible for the Puro restaurants.[3] The Jais Sky Tour page instead says riders are fastened to the wire "by the trained Warrior Group team", and does not mention RAK Leisure.[4] XTOUR cannot tell from these pages whether that is an operator, a contractor or a former arrangement. XTOUR has not read any operator's own terms.

The superlatives drift between pages too. The Jebel Jais page calls Jebel Jais the highest mountain in the UAE and 1484 by Puro the highest restaurant in the country; the Jais Flight page calls Jebel Jais the tallest peak in Ras Al Khaimah; a restaurant teaser on the Viewing Deck page calls 1484 by Puro the highest restaurant in Ras Al Khaimah "if not the entire region".[2][3][1] These are the authority's descriptions, not rankings XTOUR makes.

Jebel Jais and Ras Al Khaimah's heritage sites

Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Antiquities and Museums describes Dhayah Fort's hill as rising between date palm gardens and "the Jebel Jais mountains".[6] The fort and the emirate's other heritage places are compared in Ras Al Khaimah heritage. XTOUR does not suggest combining them in one outing.

What XTOUR does not know

XTOUR does not know where the summit lies in relation to the border, the road's condition or any seasonal closures, the Viewing Deck Park's fee, which company operates the Jais Sky Tour, or current prices and slots. It has not verified accessibility at any of the attractions.

Frequently asked questions

Good to know

Is Jebel Jais in the UAE or in Oman?

XTOUR does not state where the summit lies, because it holds no official boundary source for it. According to Ras Al Khaimah Tourism, Jebel Jais is 'in Ras Al Khaimah' and belongs to the Al Hajar range, which it says straddles the UAE and Oman from Ras Al Khaimah to the Musandam Peninsula. The road, deck and adventures in this guide are the ones that authority lists.

Can I stay overnight on Jebel Jais?

According to Ras Al Khaimah Tourism's Jebel Jais page, overnight stays are possible at Bear Grylls Explorers Camp, which it says has air-conditioned cabins with en-suite bathrooms, and as glamping at Camp 1770. XTOUR has not checked availability or prices with either.
