Kanazawa, Takayama, Shirakawa-go: what to book

Seven SkyGate products sit between Kanazawa, the Hida mountains and the Northern Alps, and they are spread over four prefectures. This guide helps you choose one anchor for the day and separates stops on a coach tour from tickets that admit you.

Quick answer

According to SkyGate's listings read on 29 September 2026, choose one anchor per day: Kenrokuen Garden Ticket for a garden day in Kanazawa, the Ishikawa White Ring Bus Tour for Shirakawa-go by coach from Kanazawa, or a family ticket in Ishikawa. The gorge and mountain tickets follow their own operators' seasons.

Pick one anchor for the day

The seven products in this guide look like one region, but XTOUR's reading of their addresses is that they sit in four prefectures: Ishikawa, Gifu, Niigata and Nagano. XTOUR has no sourced travel times between these venues, so treat each ticket as the anchor for its own day rather than a stop to add to another. The real choice is which anchor fits where you are sleeping and who is travelling.

Two products start in Kanazawa and are the natural pair to weigh against each other: a garden ticket and a coach tour. Two more are Ishikawa family venues. One is a bear park in the mountains beyond Takayama. Two are gorge or mountain rides that only make sense if you are willing to travel to them.

Kanazawa: the garden or the coach day

The Kenrokuen Garden Ticket is a single-option admission to a landscape garden in Kanazawa.[1] The garden's operator, Ishikawa Prefecture's Gold Leaf Castle and Kenrokuen Garden Management Office, heads its site with the Special Place of Scenic Beauty designation and gives an address at Marunouchi 1-1-1.[2] SkyGate's description names the Kotoji stone lantern, ponds and teahouses and calls the garden one of Japan's Three Great Gardens. Its listing says last admission is 30 minutes before closing and tells you to check the official website for hours and closure dates; the operator's homepage as read does not state hours, so that is where to confirm them.[2] The listing names only garden admission, so the neighbouring castle park is not part of the product.[1]

The Ishikawa White Ring Bus Tour is the opposite kind of day: a coach from Kanazawa into the Hida region with free time at Shirakawa-go.[3] It has two routes. Shirakawa-go and Hida Takayama continues to walk Takayama's Edo-period old town and lasts about 9 hours 15 minutes, according to the option text. Shirakawa-go and Gokayama Village visits the gassho-style houses of Ainokura in Gokayama instead and lasts about 7 hours 45 minutes. Each route also has a preschooler fare for ages 2 to 5, which SkyGate describes as a reserved bus seat with no meals or experience fees.[3]

Everything the tour visits is a stop, not a ticket. SkyGate's price lists a sightseeing bus tour, a tour guide and lunch, and no admission fees. SkyGate's page does not give a meeting point or departure time in Kanazawa, so that stays unknown until the seller confirms it. It also says the schedule may change or the tour may be cancelled because of weather or road conditions.[3]

Why you might take the coach rather than go alone: the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association says there is no train to the village, so you arrive by bus from Kanazawa, about 1 hour 30 minutes on the association's figure, or from Takayama, about 50 minutes.[4] The association describes a village that was chosen as a traditional building preservation district in 1976 and registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 together with Gokayama, and says it is a heavy-snow area.[5] See the Shirakawa-go page on XTOUR for the village.

How to choose between the two. Take Kenrokuen if you want a short, self-paced visit in the city with no fixed group schedule. Take the White Ring tour if the village is the reason you are in Hokuriku. Pick the Takayama route for the old town and the Gokayama route for a second gassho settlement and the shorter day.

Ishikawa with children: zoo or insect museum

These two are similar in length, so the difference is the animals. SkyGate lists a two-hour duration for both.[8][6]

The Ishikawa Zoo Ticket admits you to a zoo with Asian elephants, Bornean orangutans, pygmy hippos and a Big Cat Valley that includes a white tiger, according to SkyGate. The address SkyGate gives is in Nomi, although the supplier's city label reads Kaga. The listing says wheelchairs can be borrowed and that the zoo has gently graded paths, ramps, tactile paving and Braille information boards.[6] The operator's homepage says online tickets are available and warns that the connection can be slow when it is crowded, and it promotes a separate Night ZOO 2026 programme.[7] SkyGate describes its option as standard admission and does not mention Night ZOO.[6]

The Ishikawa Insect Museum Ticket is a smaller, more specialised visit in Hakusan, not Kanazawa.[8] The operator's English site calls it the biggest insectarium on the Sea of Japan side and describes a Butterfly Garden with about a thousand butterflies and a Watching Section of about 20 species including Hercules beetles and leaf-like insects. It lists hours of 9:30 to 5:00 from April to October and 9:30 to 4:30 from November to March, closing on Tuesdays with exceptions in July, August and Golden Week, and gives about 20 minutes on foot from Tsurugi station on the Ishikawa line. The operator also lists a nursing room and free wheelchair rental.[9]

How to choose. Pick the zoo for large animals and a day outdoors. Pick the insect museum for a compact visit built around live insects and butterflies, and check the Tuesday closing rule first.

Beyond Takayama town: Gifu Okuhida Bears Park Ticket

The Gifu Okuhida Bears Park Ticket is not in Takayama's old town: the Gifu Prefecture tourism site places the bear ranch in the Okuhida Onsen area of Takayama and gives about 67 minutes by bus from the Takayama Nohi Bus Center on the Shinhotaka Onsen service, or about 60 minutes by car from Takayama IC.[11] SkyGate's option is admission with bear food included for feeding.[10] The prefecture's page describes bears catching thrown food and says a cub-cuddling experience is offered when the season allows.[11] SkyGate says the cub photo sessions are seasonal, cost extra on site and can be changed or cancelled depending on the animals' condition.[10]

The prefecture's hours are 8:00 to 5:00 from April to November and 9:00 to 4:30 from December to March, with a Wednesday closing day in winter only.[11] Whether it justifies a separate trip is XTOUR's reading of the travel time above: it works as a half-day out of Takayama rather than an add-on to the old town, and the White Ring tour does not visit it.[3]

Gorge and mountain rides: two different clocks

Kiyotsukyo Gorge Tunnel Ticket. The tunnel is in Tokamachi, Niigata, not Ishikawa or Toyama. SkyGate describes a 750-metre tunnel with viewing points over the gorge, the Tunnel of Light designed by MAD Architects in 2018 and a Light Cave with a shallow mirrored pool. The listing says the water at the Panorama Station is about 0.5 to 2 centimetres deep, so footwear may get wet.[12] The Niigata tourism association gives 8:30 to 5:00 from March to November, about 40 minutes to an hour inside for the round trip, and access by express bus from Echigo-Yuzawa station followed by a walk of about 30 minutes from the bus stop. It also lists 2026 dates on which entry is by reservation only, including 10 to 12 October and 24 October to 3 November.[13] The second option, the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2026 Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel Admission, is for visitors who also hold the 2026 Echigo-Tsumari common ticket, and SkyGate says to bring both tickets on reservation-only dates. Which option you need depends on whether you hold that common ticket; the standard option is the one without it.[12]

Hakuba Iwatake Mountain Resort. This is a gondola admission in Hakuba Village, Nagano.[15] SkyGate says the gondola ride takes about seven minutes each way and that both options include round-trip rides on the gondola and South Lift 5. The two options are Admission and Admission (Pets); the pets option covers pet-friendly summit areas, and pets must be caged to ride the South Lift.[14] The operator's homepage lists the gondola at 8:30 to 4:20 uphill with the last descent at 4:50, running until 15 November.[15] SkyGate says lift operations and outdoor activities can change with the weather.[14] The operator and SkyGate's calendar govern which days are open; this guide states none.

How to choose. Kiyotsu is a short walk-in art and gorge visit where the calendar and reservation rules matter most. Hakuba is a mountain viewpoint day with a season that ends in mid-November.

How to choose

  • If you are based in Kanazawa and want one easy day, start with the Kenrokuen Garden Ticket.
  • If Shirakawa-go is the reason for the trip, take the Ishikawa White Ring Bus Tour and choose Takayama or Gokayama by the route.
  • If you are travelling with children in Ishikawa, choose between the Ishikawa Zoo Ticket and the Ishikawa Insect Museum Ticket by animal size and opening days.
  • If you are already in the Takayama area, the Gifu Okuhida Bears Park Ticket is a separate excursion, since the prefecture's page gives about 67 minutes by bus from the Takayama Nohi Bus Center.[11]
  • If you want a gorge or mountain ride, the Kiyotsukyo Gorge Tunnel Ticket depends on reservation dates, and the Hakuba Iwatake Mountain Resort follows the gondola season.

Before you book

  • Check the age bands on each SkyGate option; for example the zoo lists children aged 3 to 14 and the insect museum aged 6 to 18, with adults from 15 and 19.[8][6]
  • The zoo and insect museum listings say age verification may be required at reception, so bring a valid ID such as a driver's licence, insurance card or student ID.[8][6]
  • SkyGate's option data marks the Kenrokuen, Hakuba Iwatake, Okuhida Bears Park and Ishikawa Insect Museum options as non-refundable, so read each page's terms before paying.[8][10][14][1]
  • SkyGate's White Ring cancellation terms step down as the date nears, with a full refund only at least 11 days before travel.[3]
  • Cub photo sessions at the bear park and the Night ZOO programme are not part of the standard admission options described by SkyGate.[6][10]

Frequently asked questions

Good to know

Does the Ishikawa White Ring Bus Tour include entry to anything?

Can I fit Kenrokuen Garden into a Shirakawa-go coach day?

XTOUR cannot say. SkyGate lists the White Ring tour at about 9 hours 15 minutes for the Takayama route and about 7 hours 45 minutes for the Gokayama route, and does not state a meeting point or departure time, so whether a garden visit fits is unknown. Kenrokuen is not on the tour's itinerary.

Is the Kiyotsukyo Gorge Tunnel in Kanazawa's region?

No. SkyGate's address and the Niigata tourism association's page place it in Tokamachi, Niigata Prefecture. The association's page says it is reached by express bus from Echigo-Yuzawa station and lists 2026 dates on which entry is by advance reservation only.
