Archiginnasio of Bologna
Palazzo dell'Archiginnasio
The Archiginnasio is a sixteenth-century palace on Piazza Galvani in Bologna, built as a single seat for the university and now home to the Archiginnasio library and an anatomical theatre.
Why go
The Palazzo dell'Archiginnasio was built in 1562 and 1563 to give Bologna's university teaching a single seat, according to the Archiginnasio's own site; it stopped serving the university in 1803 and has housed the library since 1838. Its Anatomical Theatre, an amphitheatre-shaped room, was designed in 1637 for anatomy lessons. This record is the building; the library that occupies it is a separate institution, and the site says the library's part of the building is not open for tourist visits. The same page says visiting the Anatomical Theatre requires online booking, which also covers the Stabat Mater hall when the library is not using it, and that these visits are managed by Bologna Welcome.
