Braga Cathedral

Sé de Braga · Sé Catedral de Santa Maria Maior

Braga Cathedral (Sé de Braga) is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Braga in the centre of Braga, begun at the end of the 11th century, with its chapels, cloister and the cathedral's Treasury Museum.

Why go

The cathedral's own site says it is first of all a place of worship, begun at the end of the 11th century, and that its Chapter, created in 1071, cares for it and its heritage. Its visit page describes three routes: the Treasury Museum (Tesouro-Museu) in the 18th-century former chapter house; the chapels of the Kings, São Geraldo and Glória with the upper choir and organs, accompanied by a cathedral guide; and the cathedral church itself. Its ticket page says tickets are bought at the reception in the cloister, entered from Rua do Cabido or the side entrance by Rua D. Diogo de Sousa, that tourist visits inside the cathedral are not allowed during services, and that visits are booked by email. Its information page adds that only visitors pay, while those who come to pray enter free, and that photography is not allowed inside the Treasury Museum.
