Clava Cairns
Balnuaran of Clava
The Clava Cairns are a group of Bronze Age burial cairns and standing stones at Balnuaran of Clava, on a terrace above the River Nairn east of Inverness, in the care of Historic Environment Scotland.
Why go
The Clava Cairns at Balnuaran of Clava are the remains of a prehistoric cemetery on a terrace above the River Nairn, which Historic Environment Scotland says are about 4,000 years old and were built to house the dead. HES says two parts of the wider complex are open to the public, Balnuaran of Clava and Milton of Clava, with burial monuments and the remains of a medieval chapel; this record is the Balnuaran group only. Visit Inverness Loch Ness describes three cairns with passage graves, ring cairns, kerb cairns and standing stones. HES's directions place the site near Inverness, east of Culloden Battlefield.
