Why go

The Museu Nacional de Conímbriga, part of Museus e Monumentos de Portugal, says its museum space corresponds roughly to the area of the ancient city, only partly opened to visitors, and takes in the excavated ruins, the archaeological reserve and the museum. It describes its permanent exhibition of about 1,500 objects and the visitable area of the ruins, about 3 hectares with monuments and mosaics in situ, as one conceptual unit. The museum opened in 1962 as the Museu Monográfico de Conímbriga and became a national museum in 2017; the MMP ticket page says the site was classified a National Monument in 1910. That ticket page says the 'Acesso 52' free tickets for residents of Portugal are not issued online but only at a physical ticket office. This record is the archaeological site, and Coimbra is only a base for it.
