Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel

清津峡渓谷トンネル

A walking tunnel with viewing stations and art installations in Kiyotsu Gorge, Tokamachi, Niigata.

Why go

Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel (清津峡渓谷トンネル) is an approximately 750 m walking tunnel through the wall of Kiyotsu Gorge in Tokamachi, Niigata Prefecture. The Niigata tourism association says it was redesigned in 2018 by the architecture group MAD Architects as an art installation known as the Tunnel of Light, and describes five elements, wood, soil, metal, fire and water. The same page calls Kiyotsu Gorge one of Japan's three major gorges and gives hours of 8:30 to 17:00 from March to November and 9:00 to 16:00 from December to February, with winter closures possible in snow.
