Padrão dos Descobrimentos
The Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries) is a riverside monument at Belém in Lisbon, a stylised caravel with Prince Henry the Navigator at the prow and 32 figures of the age of Portuguese expansion, rebuilt in concrete and stone in 1960.
Why go
The Padrão dos Descobrimentos, which Visit Lisboa calls the Monument to the Discoveries, stands beside the Tagus at Belém. Its operator's page says architect Cottinelli Telmo and sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida first raised it in 1940 as a temporary structure for the Exposição do Mundo Português, that it was rebuilt in concrete and stone in 1960 for the fifth centenary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator, and that it opened in 1985 as a cultural centre, with a viewpoint, an auditorium and exhibition rooms fitted inside. The sculpture is a stylised caravel with Prince Henry at the prow followed by 32 navigators, cartographers, chroniclers and other figures of the period. EGEAC runs the monument; its ticket page sells one ticket for the viewpoint, exhibition and film and a separate exhibition ticket, says the exhibitions are temporary and the exhibition ticket gives access whenever one is showing, and names BOL as the only authorised online ticket seller.
