Pont du Gard

The Pont du Gard is a Roman aqueduct bridge at Vers-Pont-du-Gard in the Gard, Occitanie, with a museum, cinema and children's Ludo area on site.

Why go

The Pont du Gard is a monumental aqueduct built in the 1st century AD, 49 metres high with three tiers of arches, which the official site calls the highest Roman aqueduct bridge in the world. It was part of a 50-kilometre system carrying water from Uzès to Nîmes and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. The site, managed by a public cultural institution (an EPCC), offers a museum, a cinema, audio guides and a Ludo space for children; the museum, Ludo and cinema are in the building on the left bank, in the commune of Vers-Pont-du-Gard. It is in Occitanie, near Nîmes and Uzès, not in Avignon.
