Sagres Fortress

Fortaleza de Sagres

The Sagres Fortress (Fortaleza de Sagres) is the fortification of the Ponta de Sagres promontory in Vila do Bispo, in the Algarve, a National Monument run by Museus e Monumentos de Portugal, according to the operator's site.

Why go

The Sagres Fortress occupies the Sagres promontory, which its operator, Museus e Monumentos de Portugal, identifies with the ancient Promunturium Sacrum and says was given the European Heritage Label in 2015. The operator's history page links the site to Prince Henry, who obtained leave in 1443 to found the Vila do Infante there and died there in 1460, but says little of that town survives besides traces of walls, a cistern tower and the enigmatic stone 'wind rose' uncovered in the 20th century. Its interactive map adds that the wind rose is a circle of 48 radial rows of stones about 50 metres across, read either as a wind rose or as a large sundial, and that the bastions, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Graça and the gate in the wall date from the 16th to 18th centuries. The operator's services page says a new exhibition centre opened there on 13 November 2022. The Monumentos do Algarve page of the Direção Regional de Cultura do Algarve says study visits must be requested by email to a Museus e Monumentos de Portugal address.
