São Jorge Castle
Castelo de São Jorge
São Jorge Castle is the walled medieval castle on the hilltop overlooking the Tagus in Lisbon, a national monument run by EGEAC with gardens, an archaeological site and a museum inside its walls.
Why go
São Jorge Castle stands at the top of the hill where, its operator says, the citadel of Islamic-era Lisbon stood, and where the medieval castle was built in the period after the city was taken by Afonso Henriques in 1147. The operator's history pages describe today's castle as gothic, shaped under King Afonso III and/or King Denis, with a walled quadrangular perimeter fortified by eleven towers and a barbican with a moat on its most exposed sides. EGEAC runs the castle and sells tickets online and at the castle's ticket office, naming BOL as the only authorised online platform. Its ticket page says the ticket gives access to the monument and its gardens at any time within opening hours, and that the archaeological site and the camera obscura in the Tower of Ulysses can be seen only on the guided tours included in the ticket. The record is the castle within its walls, not the Castelo neighbourhood around it.
