Quick answer
For Istanbul, the Aegean sites and Cappadocia, April to early June and September to October give mild days. According to MGM, the Turkish State Meteorological Service, average July maximums are 29.7°C in Istanbul, 33.3°C in İzmir, 34.2°C in Antalya and 38.8°C in Şanlıurfa, so high summer suits the beach more than ruins. The Mediterranean averages 23.9°C in June and is still 24.6°C in October. Eastern Anatolia is a summer destination for sightseeing: Kars averages −16.2°C on January nights. The Black Sea coast around Rize is rainy in every month. Skiing is a winter trip of its own, at Uludağ, Kartalkaya, Erciyes, Palandöken and Sarıkamış. These are long-term averages, not a forecast for your dates.
The best time to visit Turkey depends on the region
Turkey (officially Türkiye) does not have one climate. On the same January day the average maximum is 15.0°C in Antalya and −4.7°C in Kars.[9][3] So choose the region first, then the month, then check the forecast.
- Istanbul and Marmara. April to June and September to October are mild. July and August average a 29.7°C maximum, and December and January each bring about 16 rainy days.[1]
- The Aegean coast. Hot, dry summers and wet, mild winters. İzmir averages 33.3°C in July with less than one rainy day in the month, and 134.5 mm of rain in January.[2]
- The Mediterranean coast. A long beach season and wet winters: Antalya averages 250.9 mm of rain in December and 4.7 mm in July.[3]
- Cappadocia and Central Anatolia. A plateau climate with warm days, cool nights and cold winters. Nevşehir's July average runs from 13.7°C at night to 28.5°C by day, and its wettest month is May.[5]
- The Black Sea coast. Mild and wet. Rize averages about 14 rainy days in every month of the year.[7]
- Eastern Anatolia. Short, pleasant summers and severe winters. Erzurum averages −13.9°C on January nights and a 26.6°C maximum in July.[8]
- Southeastern Anatolia. Spring and autumn are the seasons for sightseeing. Şanlıurfa averages a 22.4°C maximum in April and 38.8°C in July, with almost no summer rain.[10]
Average temperatures in ten Turkish cities
The figures below are MGM's published long-term averages of the daily maximum and minimum temperature for each province's main station.[5][4][3][2][1] The measurement period differs by station and is shown on each MGM page; all ten begin between 1927 and 1959 and run to 2025.[9][8][7][6][10]
| City and region | January | April | July | October |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Istanbul, Marmara | 9.6 and 4.2 | 17.4 and 9.2 | 29.7 and 20.5 | 20.6 and 13.7 |
| İzmir, Aegean | 12.5 and 5.8 | 21.0 and 11.2 | 33.3 and 22.6 | 24.1 and 14.7 |
| Antalya, Mediterranean | 15.0 and 6.1 | 21.4 and 11.3 | 34.2 and 22.9 | 26.6 and 15.4 |
| Ankara, Central Anatolia | 4.4 and −3.1 | 17.4 and 5.5 | 30.4 and 15.9 | 20.0 and 7.2 |
| Nevşehir, Cappadocia | 4.0 and −3.6 | 16.0 and 5.1 | 28.5 and 13.7 | 18.3 and 6.8 |
| Trabzon, Black Sea | 10.9 and 4.8 | 15.6 and 8.8 | 26.1 and 20.0 | 20.1 and 13.7 |
| Rize, Black Sea | 10.7 and 3.9 | 15.5 and 8.4 | 26.0 and 19.7 | 20.5 and 13.2 |
| Erzurum, Eastern Anatolia | −3.9 and −13.9 | 11.1 and 0.1 | 26.6 and 11.1 | 15.3 and 1.7 |
| Kars, Eastern Anatolia | −4.7 and −16.2 | 11.5 and −0.6 | 25.6 and 10.0 | 15.1 and 0.5 |
| Şanlıurfa, Southeastern Anatolia | 10.0 and 2.2 | 22.4 and 10.4 | 38.8 and 24.4 | 27.1 and 14.7 |
A station in a provincial capital does not describe a mountain pasture, a ski slope or a beach resort elsewhere in the same province. Use the table to compare regions, not to pack for a specific hillside.
A climate pattern is not a forecast
Everything above is an average over decades. It tells you that Antalya in July is reliably hot and dry, and that Rize in October is often wet. It cannot tell you whether it will rain on your balloon morning or whether there will be snow on the slopes in your week. For that, use MGM's forecast for the district on mgm.gov.tr in the days before, and the operator's own status page for anything that depends on lifts, boats or flights.
Cities and ancient sites: spring and autumn
Open archaeological sites such as Ephesus, Pergamon, Hierapolis and Perge involve hours outdoors. April, May and October give İzmir average maximums of 21.0°C, 26.2°C and 24.1°C.[2] In July and August the same sites are a dawn-to-late-morning visit. April still has about eight rainy days in İzmir and ten in Istanbul, so carry a layer and a plan for a wet day.[1]
Istanbul works in winter as a museum and food city if you accept short, damp days: January averages a 9.6°C maximum and about 16 rainy days.[1]
Beach and sea: June to October
MGM publishes long-term monthly averages of sea surface temperature for each of Turkey's seas, shown below for May to November.[12][11]
| Month | Mediterranean | Aegean |
|---|---|---|
| May | 20.8 | 18.8 |
| June | 23.9 | 22.1 |
| July | 26.7 | 24.2 |
| August | 28.1 | 24.6 |
| September | 27.0 | 23.3 |
| October | 24.6 | 20.8 |
| November | 21.4 | 18.0 |
Two things follow. The Mediterranean coast is warmer than the Aegean in every month, by about two to four degrees. And the sea lags the air: October water on the Mediterranean is warmer than June water, while Antalya's October air has cooled to a 26.6°C average maximum.[3] For travellers who want both ruins and swimming, late September and October on the Mediterranean is the overlap. Sea state, wind and jellyfish on a given day are local and current; ask on the spot.
The Black Sea coast and the highlands
The official tourism portal describes the Black Sea region as temperate with plenty of rainfall in each season, which is what keeps its plateaus green.[18] The east of the coast is the wettest part. Rize averages 293.8 mm of rain in October and 96.5 mm in May, its driest month, which is still more than Ankara receives in its wettest.[4][7] Trabzon is markedly drier, with 36.6 mm in July.[6]
Plan Black Sea days with a second option that does not need a view: a town, a tea garden, a museum. XTOUR has not verified when individual highland roads are open, and a town being reachable says nothing about the track above it. Ask locally on the day.
Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia
In the east, winter dominates the calendar. Kars averages a −4.7°C maximum in January and does not reach a positive average minimum until May.[9] Sightseeing at Ani or around Lake Van is a late May to early October plan. A winter visit is a cold-weather trip and should be packed for as one.
In the south-east the problem is the opposite one. Şanlıurfa's average maximum is 34°C or higher from June to September.[10] Göbekli Tepe, Harran, Mardin and Diyarbakır are at their most comfortable in April, May, October and early November.
Skiing in Turkey: a separate winter trip
Skiing is a real reason to visit Turkey, and it needs its own planning. The descriptions below come from the official tourism portal. They are background. They do not tell you whether a lift is turning or how much snow there is this week, and XTOUR has not verified current operations at any resort.
- Uludağ, near Bursa. Ski area between 1,750 and 2,543 m, with equipment rental and instructors, and late December to late March given as the best season.[13]
- Kartalkaya, near Bolu. Ski area between 1,850 and 2,200 m, a season described as December to the end of March, terrain described as suitable for alpine skiing, ski touring and cross-country, two snow parks, and rental and instructors on site.[14]
- Erciyes, above Kayseri. A winter sports centre on the Tekir plateau at 2,100 to 2,900 m, with the choice of staying on the mountain or in Kayseri city and going up daily.[15]
- Palandöken, above Erzurum. A top elevation of 3,176 m, described as the mountain for skilled skiers, with the Ejder lifts and trails sometimes closed because of fog and avalanche risk.[16]
- Sarıkamış, in Kars province. Runs through pine forest, with a season described as 20 December to 20 March.[17]
One caution about the portal itself: its Palandöken page gives two different season windows in different paragraphs, November to June in one and late October to early May in another.[16] Treat every published season window as approximate.
Matching the resort to the skier
- Beginners taking lessons. The portal's Uludağ and Kartalkaya pages both mention equipment rental and instructors.[14][13] Confirm the lesson language, the meeting point and what happens to the lesson if the beginner lift closes.
- Confident piste skiers. The portal describes Palandöken as the mountain for skilled skiers.[16] Compare what is open, not the total length of runs on a brochure.
- Snowboarders and freestyle. The portal mentions two snow parks at Kartalkaya.[14] Ask whether the park is built and open for your dates.
- Off-piste and ski touring. The portal itself warns of avalanche danger at Şeytan Creek on Erciyes in winter.[15] This guide gives no route advice. Hire a qualified mountain guide and use current avalanche information.
- Families and mixed abilities. One booking can still mean three separate days: a lesson group, a piste skier and a non-skier. Agree the meeting time and place before anyone rides a lift. Erzurum's January average maximum is −3.9°C, which is hard on small children.[8]
- A non-skier in the group. Erciyes and Uludağ have cities below them, Kayseri and Bursa, which the portal presents as places to stay and explore.[13][15] Check how the non-skier gets up and down the mountain on foot, because XTOUR has not verified pedestrian use of any lift.
- Fixed dates at the edge of winter. For early December or April, do not let the trip depend on snow. Book terms you can change, or a plan that works without skiing.
- A one-resort trip. Fog or wind can close the upper lifts, and then the plan has to work without them. Decide what that plan is before you go.
- Choosing between resorts. Compare altitude, the kind of terrain, lesson provision and what else is nearby. There is no single best resort.
- Before you travel. Check the resort operator's lift and snow status and the MGM forecast when you book, a week before and the day before.
Ramadan, the bayrams and national holidays
Ramadan and the two religious holidays follow the lunar calendar, so each falls about eleven days earlier every year. For 2027 the Presidency of Religious Affairs lists the start of Ramadan on 8 February, Ramazan Bayramı on 9 to 11 March and Kurban Bayramı on 16 to 19 May.[19] The same site carries the lists for later years.
The fixed national holidays in its 2027 list are 1 January, 23 April, 1 May, 19 May, 15 July, 30 August and 29 October, with the afternoon of 28 October.[20]
What a holiday changes differs by site, and XTOUR has not verified it site by site. As one example, when checked in September 2026 the National Palaces page for Topkapı Palace showed it closed on the first day of Ramazan Bayramı and on New Year's Day and open on the other listed holidays.[21] Both bayrams are national holidays lasting several days, so book transport and rooms for those dates early and check each museum's own page.
Weather-dependent experiences need a spare day
A balloon flight, a boat day and a mountain walk share one feature: the weather can cancel them on the morning. Anadolu Agency reported on 29 January 2026 that Cappadocia's balloons had been grounded for four days by wind, rain and fog, that flights need permission from the Civil Aviation Directorate's Nevşehir office each time, and that the region flies on roughly 220 days a year.[22] Put the weather-dependent activity on your first available day, keep a later day free for a second attempt, and choose a fallback that does not depend on the same weather. Choosing tours and experiences in Turkey covers what to ask about cancellation terms.
Families, older travellers and reduced mobility
Season is a comfort and safety question before it is a scenery question.
- Heat. With young children or anyone who tires in heat, avoid open ancient sites on the Aegean, the Mediterranean and in the south-east in July and August, or limit them to the first hours of the morning.
- Rain. On the Black Sea coast, waterproofs and a dry indoor option are needed in any month.
- Cold. Cappadocia, Ankara and the east average sub-zero nights in January, so winter trips need proper clothing for children.
- Mobility. Rain, snow and ice change how usable a route is even when the site is open. XTOUR has not verified surfaces, shelter or seating at any site in Turkey. Ask the site directly, and see Accessible travel in Turkey.
Festivals and harvests
A festival tradition and this year's event are different things. Before you build a trip around a festival, a harvest or a ceremony, find the organiser's own announcement of the date, the venue and whether the public can attend. XTOUR does not publish event dates for Turkey.
Where to find weather for a single city
This guide compares regions. For one city, MGM's province page gives all twelve months of temperature, rainfall and rainy days, and the same site carries the forecast. For how the season changes trip length, see How many days in Turkey, and for choosing regions, the Turkey travel guide.
