Borobudur tickets: courtyard or climb, and the operator's rules on the monument

Borobudur's operator sells two kinds of ticket: one for the courtyard around the monument and one that lets you go up onto it, with obligatory upanat sandals and a list of rules. This guide sets out what each ticket covers according to the operator's own pages, where those pages disagree, and what XTOUR could not confirm.

Quick answer

InJourney Destination Management, which runs Borobudur, sells a Pelataran (courtyard) ticket for the grounds around the temple and a Naik Candi ticket for going up onto the structure. According to InJourney Destination Management's ticket site, the courtyard ticket is for domestic visitors only, and the climb ticket includes a wristband, upanat sandals to keep and a guide. According to InJourney Destination Management, climbing starts at 08.30 WIB on its ticket site and at 09.00 WIB on an English experience page. According to InJourney Destination Management's entry guide, visitors on the monument may not touch reliefs or statues, scale the structure, smoke, bring food or fly drones without permission. Borobudur is in Magelang Regency, Central Java, not in Yogyakarta.

The short answer

Borobudur has two everyday tickets, and the difference is whether you go up the monument. The operator's entry guide says tickets fall into two categories, Pelataran Candi (the temple courtyard) and Naik Candi (going up the temple), and that the courtyard ticket covers only the grounds while the Naik Candi ticket lets you enter and go up. Both are sold by InJourney Destination Management, whose pages carry the company name PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan dan Ratu Boko (Persero).[4]

The detail that changes the choice for many foreign visitors is on the ticket site, not the guide: it lists the courtyard ticket as "hanya untuk Pengunjung Domestik", for domestic visitors only.[1] The same site's product list says the Naik Candi ticket already includes access to the courtyard.[2] The pages read on 11 October 2026 do not say what a foreign visitor who wants only the grounds should buy, and XTOUR does not know.

Borobudur is in Magelang Regency, Central Java.[6] It is not in Yogyakarta, which is a base people stay in, not the place that contains the temple.

What each ticket covers, in the operator's words

The ticket site's climb page lists what the Naik Candi price includes: access up the temple structure, a wristband ticket, upanat sandals "sebagai souvenir" and a tour guide. As of October 2026, InJourney Destination Management's ticket page for Candi Borobudur prints the climb (Naik Candi) price as Rp150,000, without saying whether that figure is for domestic or foreign buyers.[1] The site's product list describes the courtyard ticket only as entry to the courtyard area, "tidak termasuk naik candi", not including the climb.[2]

The entry guide's price tables are for "Wisatawan Nusantara", domestic tourists, and say the regular ticket includes the Karmawibhangga Museum.[4] XTOUR does not reprint those figures here: they are domestic rates, they differ between weekdays and weekends and holidays, and the guide is dated 27 July 2026.

Getting from the gate to the stones

The entry guide describes the route in. Visitors enter through Kampung Seni Borobudur, an arts village with a museum, food and souvenir areas, a pendapa and an amphitheatre, where entry is free and only parking is charged, and the ticket counters are there. With a Naik Candi ticket, a shuttle takes you to the point where sandals and mineral water are handed out.[4]

The sandals are not optional. The guide says everyone going up must wear specially designed sandals called upanat so as not to damage the temple stone, that you choose your size, and that the sandals are not returned and can be taken home.[4]

Start times: two answers

The operator's pages do not agree. The ticket site and the July 2026 entry guide both give climbing as 08.30-17.00 WIB.[1] The English experience page announcing daily temple tours gives "Every day, at 09.00 - 17.00 WIB".[5] XTOUR does not know which is current; the ticket site is the page you buy from, and it recommends arriving 30 to 45 minutes before the start time.[1]

Daily limits

The entry guide says the quota for going up the temple is limited each day and recommends buying online.[4] The English experience page says the operator manages the number of visitors "to maintain the comfort and sustainability of Borobudur Temple".[5] Neither page gives the size of the quota, and XTOUR does not know it. The ticket site does give a number for two other products: Borobudur Sunrise and Borobudur Sunset are each "Terbatas 100 orang/hari", limited to 100 people a day.[2]

The operator's rules on the monument

These are the rules InJourney's entry guide lists for visitors going up the temple, as published on 27 July 2026 and read on 11 October 2026. They are the operator's rules, translated from Indonesian, not XTOUR advice.

The guide's "anjuran" (what is asked of you): wear the special sandals; photographs are allowed without touching the reliefs; respect the historic area; listen to the guide's explanation; and wear "pakaian yang sopan", polite or modest clothing.[4]

Its "larangan" (prohibitions): no touching the reliefs; no smoking; no touching the statues; no climbing on the temple ("Dilarang memanjat candi"); no food in the temple area; no littering; and no flying drones without permission.[4]

XTOUR's reading is that "memanjat" here means scaling the structure itself, not walking up the stairs a Naik Candi ticket allows; the guide does not define it. Nor does it define polite clothing further, and XTOUR does not add a dress code it did not read.

Other ways in

The ticket site sells more than the two everyday tickets. Borobudur Manohara Premium starts at the Manohara Borobudur Cultural Center and includes entry, the climb, upanat, a guide, light refreshments and a souvenir.[3] The product list also shows a Picnic Breakfast at Dagi Abhinaya, a climb reservation for domestic students, and a scooter route inside Borobudur.[2]

The operator also sells combination tickets with its other two sites. The Borobudur entry guide lists Borobudur-Prambanan and Borobudur-Ratu Boko combinations for domestic tourists.[4] The Ratu Boko ticket article, dated 6 October 2026, says the Ratu Boko-Borobudur combination is valid for two days and that combination tickets can be bought only offline, at the counter.[7] The two articles' price tables for domestic visitors do not agree on the weekend price of the same Borobudur-Ratu Boko combination, and the Ratu Boko article prints the same pair of figures in its weekday and weekend tables.[4] XTOUR does not reprint either figure and does not know which is current; the counter that sells the combination is the place to confirm it.

Special days

Everyday tickets do not apply on every day. For Waisak 2026 the operator closed climbing, courtyard visits and the sunrise and sunset products on 31 May, and limited regular visitors to Zone 2 from 07.00 to 14.00 WIB.[8] How Waisak works for visitors is in Waisak at Borobudur: what the operator states. What you are looking at once you are up there is in Borobudur's levels and reliefs explained.

What XTOUR does not know

XTOUR does not know what a foreign visitor who wants only the courtyard is offered, the size of the daily climbing quota, current foreign-visitor prices, the physical demands of the climb or its accessibility, or which of the two published climbing start times is in force. None of the operator pages read on 11 October 2026 answers these. XTOUR does not sell Borobudur tickets.

Frequently asked questions

Good to know

Is Borobudur in Yogyakarta?

No. According to InJourney Destination Management's entry guide, the temple is in Kecamatan Borobudur, Kabupaten Magelang, Central Java. XTOUR treats Yogyakarta as a base for Borobudur, not as the place that contains it: the temple is in a different province.

Can I go up the monument during Waisak?

Not on the main day in 2026. According to InJourney Destination Management, in a release dated 29 May 2026, climbing, courtyard visits and the sunrise and sunset products were closed on 31 May 2026, with regular visitors limited to Zone 2 from 07.00 to 14.00 WIB. XTOUR has read no operator announcement for Waisak 2027 and does not know the arrangements.

Is there a way up with a private guide?

According to InJourney Destination Management's ticket site, a product called Borobudur Manohara Premium starts at the Manohara Borobudur Cultural Center and includes entry, the climb, upanat, a guide, light refreshments and a souvenir. XTOUR has not compared it with the standard climb ticket beyond what that page lists.
