Chicago museum tickets vs CityPASS and Go City

Quick answer

According to SkyGate's listings read on 3 October 2026, the four museum tickets each admit you to one museum, while the passes are entitlements: Chicago CityPASS fixes Skydeck Chicago and Shedd Aquarium and lets you choose three more from six, the Go City Essentials Pass is three choices from two lists, the Explorer Pass is 2 to 7 choices, and the All-Inclusive Pass is unlimited visits for 1, 2, 3 or 5 days.

The short answer

If one or two museums are the point of your visit, a single ticket is the simple choice: there are four, one per museum.[6][4][2][1] If you also want an observation deck, the aquarium or a river cruise, look at the passes, which bundle a choice of attractions rather than a fixed plan. Before buying a pass for a particular museum, check that it is on that pass's list: of the museums here, the Art Institute appears only on the Chicago CityPASS list SkyGate shows, and the MCA and the Museum of Ice Cream appear on none of the pass lists SkyGate shows.[12][11][10][8]

Four museum tickets

The Art Institute of Chicago Fast Pass Ticket has one option, Fast Pass + Audio Guide, which skips the general admission line and includes all galleries, non-ticketed exhibitions and a multilingual audio guide. Tickets are sold for adults, seniors and young people aged 14 to 17, and the page says children under 14 go free and under-12s must be with an adult.[1] XTOUR could not read the museum's own website, so its hours are not given here. See the Art Institute of Chicago page on XTOUR.

The Field Museum of Natural History Ticket is general admission covering the general admission exhibits, with adult, child (3 to 17), senior and infant tickets.[2] The museum gives its address as 1400 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive and its hours as 9:00 am to 5:00 pm daily, last entry 4:00 pm, closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.[3] The page does not say whether special exhibitions are included beyond general admission. See the Field Museum page on XTOUR.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Chicago Ticket is adult general admission for visitors aged 19 and over; you swap the smartphone voucher for an admission badge at the box office.[4] The museum, at 220 E Chicago Ave, is closed on Mondays and offers free admission to young visitors through its Free 18 & Under Fund, so do not buy this ticket for a child.[5] See the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago page on XTOUR.

The Museum of Ice Cream Chicago Ticket has four options that split by day and by entry type: Weekday VIP Admission (Mondays to Fridays) and Weekend VIP Admission (Saturdays and Sundays), which add skip-the-line entry and a drink from the MOIC Cafe, and Weekday Admission (Mondays to Thursdays) and Weekend Admission (Fridays to Sundays). Note that Friday is a weekday for VIP but a weekend day for standard admission.[6] The operator gives its address as 435 North Michigan Ave and lists Tuesday as closed.[7] When XTOUR read SkyGate's calendars on 3 October 2026, they showed dates only to the end of October.[6] See the Museum of Ice Cream Chicago page on XTOUR.

Chicago CityPASS: two fixed attractions, three choices

The Chicago CityPASS includes admission to Skydeck Chicago and Shedd Aquarium, plus three more chosen from six: 360 CHICAGO, Adler Planetarium, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Field Museum, the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry, and a Shoreline Sightseeing architecture river tour. It is valid for nine days from first use.[8] CityPASS says several of the attractions, Skydeck Chicago among them, need advance reservations through the My CityPASS app.[9] See the Skydeck Chicago page on XTOUR.

Go City: three ways to choose

The Go City Chicago Essentials Pass is one option, the 3-Attraction Pass: one top attraction from 360 CHICAGO, Skydeck Chicago, a Shoreline architecture river cruise or the Field Museum, plus two from a second list including the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry, Adler Planetarium, Flyover in Chicago and the Navy Pier Ferris Wheel and Rides. The listing says each attraction may be visited once, the pass lasts 30 days from the first visit, and the attractions are subject to change.[10]

The Go City Chicago Explorer Pass is sold with 2 to 7 choices from over 30 attractions, each option valid for 30 consecutive days after first use.[11] The Go City Chicago All-Inclusive Pass is sold for 1, 2, 3 or 5 days and, once activated, is valid for that many consecutive calendar days.[12] Go City's own page says the All-Inclusive lets you visit as many attractions as you like each day, while the Explorer and Essentials are a set number of visits within 30 days.[13] SkyGate's sample lists for both name Skydeck Chicago, the Field Museum, the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry, Flyover and a one-day hop-on hop-off bus tour, and point to the Go City app for the current list.[12][11]

A pass is an entitlement, not an itinerary: XTOUR's reading is that it pays to list the attractions you actually want first, then pick the pass whose rules fit that list.

How to choose
