Planning a US trip: choosing regions and bases

XTOUR covers 28 United States destinations in eight clusters, from New York and Washington, DC to Orlando, Southern California, Las Vegas and two Hawaiian islands. This guide groups them by region, explains which are bases and which are reached on a day trip, and links to every US guide on XTOUR, so you can decide what kind of trip to plan before you buy a single ticket.

Quick answer

Start by choosing one or two regions, then a base in each. XTOUR's 28 US destinations fall into eight clusters: the Northeast (New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, Niagara Falls), Florida (Orlando, Miami, Miami Beach, Key West, Tampa, St. Augustine), Southern California (Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Anaheim, San Diego), Northern California (San Francisco, Sausalito, Napa Valley), Las Vegas, the South and Texas (Atlanta, New Orleans, Houston, San Antonio, Austin), Chicago and Seattle, and Hawaii (Oahu and Hawaii Island, two separate islands). XTOUR does not publish travel times between them.

The short answer

The United States is too large to plan as one place. The useful first decision is not which attraction to book but which region, and then which city to sleep in. Everything else, from passes to tours, follows from the base.

XTOUR covers 28 US destinations, and they fall into eight clusters.[1] This guide groups them, says what each base is for on XTOUR, and points to the detailed guide for each. It does not state travel times or flight options between regions: XTOUR holds no routing or travel-time data for the United States, so it does not guess them.

The "reached from a base" column is XTOUR's editorial grouping, based on where the products XTOUR lists start. Membership of a cluster is not geographic containment: Santa Monica is a separate city from Los Angeles, and Miami Beach a separate city from Miami.[1]

The Northeast

New York City is the deepest base on XTOUR, with guides to observation decks, museum tickets, the Statue of Liberty and harbour cruises, Broadway, family days, bike, bus and walking tours and city passes.

Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, DC are bases in their own right, each with its own guide: Boston attractions, cruises and passes, Philadelphia passes and sightseeing and Washington, DC memorials, tours and bikes. Washington, D.C. is the federal capital and is not part of any state; it has nothing to do with Washington State, where Seattle is.[1]

Niagara Falls, New York appears on XTOUR both as a destination and as the end point of SkyGate day trips that start in New York City. SkyGate's itineraries show what a day trip means here: the road tour meets at 4:00 AM and ends back in New York at 11:30 PM, the air trip runs from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and the Washington and Philadelphia trip departs at 5:00 AM and returns at 8:00 PM.[4][3][2] XTOUR's reading is that these are whole days of a trip, not add-ons to one. Compare them in day trips from New York City and Niagara Falls US side tours and tickets.

Florida

Orlando is XTOUR's theme-park base: Orlando theme park tickets and Orlando passes, ICON Park and indoor attractions. The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is not in Orlando; its operator gives its address on Merritt Island.[8] One SkyGate product adds round-trip transport from pickup points in the Orlando-Kissimmee area, which is how XTOUR links it to an Orlando stay.[9] See Kennedy Space Center and day trips from Orlando, which also covers St. Augustine.

Miami and Miami Beach are separate cities on either side of Biscayne Bay.[1] Their guides are Miami passes and sightseeing and Miami boat tours and water activities. Key West can be a base or a day trip: SkyGate's Key West day trip checks in at 6:30 AM in Miami Beach and gives the time in Key West as 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.[5] See Key West trips and cruises. Tampa has its own aquarium and zoo guide.

California

Southern California. Los Angeles has guides to theme parks and studio tours, museums and film history, bus and bike tours, city passes and the Long Beach and San Pedro ships, aquarium and Palm Springs tram. Anaheim, home of the Disneyland Resort's two parks, is a separate city in Orange County, and Santa Monica a separate city in Los Angeles County.[1] San Diego has two guides, San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld and LEGOLAND and passes, museums and the bay; LEGOLAND California is in Carlsbad, not San Diego.[12]

Northern California. San Francisco is the base for Alcatraz and bay cruises, museums and city passes and bike and hop-on hop-off tours. Sausalito and Napa Valley appear on XTOUR as places tours from San Francisco reach; one SkyGate Muir Woods tour lets you stay in Sausalito and make your own way back by ferry.[10] See Muir Woods and wine country day trips.

Las Vegas

Las Vegas has guides to views, museums and shows and city passes. Its desert day trips go to places XTOUR does not list as destinations, and two of them are easily confused: Grand Canyon West, whose resort corporation, its own website says, is owned and operated by the Hualapai Tribe, and Grand Canyon National Park.[7] The Antelope Canyon X and Horseshoe Bend tour, for example, meets at 6:00 AM and returns at 7:00 PM.[6] See Grand Canyon and desert day trips from Las Vegas. The Formula 1 guide covers the November 2026 Las Vegas Grand Prix.

The South, Texas, Chicago and Seattle

These bases stand alone on XTOUR, with no day-trip destinations around them:

Hawaii: two islands, two bases

Oahu and Hawaii Island are different islands in the US state of Hawaii.[1] XTOUR never treats them as one outing. The Kona Coast boat trips it lists check in at 75-5629 Kuakini Highway in Kailua-Kona and board at Kailua Pier, on Hawaii Island, while Oahu's products are on Oahu.[11] XTOUR does not list transport between the islands. Oahu's guides are Pearl Harbor tickets and tours and Oahu passes, parks and Diamond Head; the Oahu and Kona boat trips guide covers both islands, separately.

How many bases?

XTOUR does not prescribe a number of nights, because it holds no travel-time data and every trip's pace is different. Its reading of its own guides gives three working rules instead.

  • Give each base the days its guides fill. New York City is the primary subject of eight guides on XTOUR; Austin has one product, tied to a race weekend. The number of things you would actually do in a base is a better guide to its length than the city's size.
  • Count long day trips as full days. The itineraries above, from Niagara Falls to Antelope Canyon, run from early morning to evening or later.[6][2]
  • Do not let a departure city decide geography. A product leaving from a city is not in that city. Kennedy Space Center, LEGOLAND California and Grand Canyon West are all examples in XTOUR's guides of places that are reached from a base, not inside it.[7][12][8]

Cross-country guides

Some decisions apply in every region. XTOUR's country-level guides cover them:

What XTOUR does not cover

XTOUR's US coverage is built from the tours and tickets it lists. It does not publish flights, rail or driving routes, travel times, hotels, weather, entry requirements or costs for the United States. Use official sources for those, and use XTOUR for what to see and book once you know where you will be.

Frequently asked questions

Good to know

How many places can I see on a first US trip?

XTOUR does not prescribe a number of nights or bases, because it holds no travel-time data between US destinations. Its guides do show how long some day trips are: SkyGate's itineraries for the road trip from New York to Niagara Falls run from 4:00 AM to 11:30 PM. Count the full days you want in each base, and treat very long day trips as a whole day of your plan.

Can I visit Oahu and the Island of Hawaii on the same day?

XTOUR treats them as separate destinations. Oahu and Hawaii Island are different islands in the US state of Hawaii, and the Kona Coast boat trips XTOUR lists board at Kailua Pier in Kailua-Kona, on Hawaii Island. XTOUR does not list transport between islands.

Is Washington, DC in Washington State?

No. According to XTOUR's destination record, Washington, D.C. is the US capital and is coextensive with the District of Columbia, not part of any state. Seattle is in the US state of Washington, on the opposite side of the country.
