Quick answer
As of 3 October 2026, according to the National Park Service, Hawaii State Parks and the operators: Alcatraz can only be reached on Alcatraz City Cruises; Liberty and Ellis Islands only on Statue City Cruises; the Washington Monument and Independence Hall use timed entry; the USS Arizona Memorial programme is booked through recreation.gov with limited standby; non-residents need an entry and parking reservation for Diamond Head; and Muir Woods needs a parking reservation if you drive.
The short answer
A handful of US landmarks are not simply a question of buying a ticket and turning up. Some islands can be reached on only one authorised ferry. Some monuments are free but ration entry with timed tickets. Some parks require a reservation for entry or parking. And a tour that "visits" one of them does not always hold that reservation for you.
What follows is what each managing agency or operator said when XTOUR read its page on 3 October 2026. These are the rules most likely to change, so treat the dates as part of the claim and check the agency's own page before you travel.
| Landmark | Where | Who says what |
|---|---|---|
| Alcatraz Island | San Francisco Bay, California | According to the National Park Service, a ferry ticket from Alcatraz City Cruises, the only authorised ferry, is required to visit |
| Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island | New York Harbor | According to the National Park Service, Statue City Cruises is the only authorised ticket seller and ferry, and pedestal and crown need advance purchase |
| Washington Monument | Washington, DC | According to the National Park Service, timed-entry tickets go on Recreation.gov, typically 30 days ahead, with same-day tickets on site from 8:45 |
| Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell | Philadelphia, Pennsylvania | According to the National Park Service, Independence Hall uses reservations and timed entry, and no tickets are needed for the Liberty Bell |
| USS Arizona Memorial | Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii | According to the National Park Service, the programme is booked through recreation.gov, reservations are strongly recommended and standby is limited |
| Diamond Head State Monument | Oahu, Hawaii | According to the Hawaii DLNR Division of State Parks, non-residents have needed entry and parking reservations since 12 May 2022 |
| Muir Woods National Monument | Marin County, California | According to the National Park Service, parking reservations are required ahead of time |
| Empire State Building | New York City | According to the Empire State Building operator, all visits require a timed reservation |
Islands with one authorised ferry
Alcatraz. The National Park Service charges no entrance fee for Alcatraz Island, but says a ferry ticket from Alcatraz City Cruises is required to visit, and that it is the only NPS-authorised ferry and the only one permitted to dock and let passengers off on the island.[1] The Park Service's directions page puts that ferry at Pier 33 on The Embarcadero.[2] On XTOUR, the Official Alcatraz Island Admission Ticket + Audio Tour with Roundtrip Ferry by Alcatraz City Cruises is that ferry: SkyGate's listing includes the round trip from Pier 33, the Cellhouse audio tour and ranger programmes, with day, night and Behind the Scenes options.[3] A bay cruise from another operator is a view of the island from the water, not a visit; the Alcatraz and San Francisco Bay cruises guide sets the two side by side.
Liberty Island and Ellis Island. The National Park Service says Statue City Cruises is the only authorised ticket seller and runs the only ferries that bring visitors to the islands, from The Battery in New York and Liberty State Park in New Jersey. It also says pedestal and crown access require advance purchase and that every visitor passes airport-style security before boarding.[4] SkyGate's Official Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island Admission Ticket + Roundtrip Ferry by Statue City Cruises includes the ferry and both islands' museums, and says pedestal and crown access are not included.[6] The Park Service lists Ellis Island under both New Jersey and New York.[5]
The harbour cruises are a different product. Circle Line's Liberty Super Express, for example, stops in front of the statue with live commentary; it does not land.[7] If standing on Liberty Island is the point, only the Statue City Cruises ferry does it. The Statue of Liberty and New York Harbor cruises guide compares all thirteen products.
Free to enter, rationed by time
Washington Monument. The National Park Service says the elevator to the top needs a timed-entry ticket, released on Recreation.gov typically 30 days ahead, with same-day tickets handed out on site from 8:45 each morning.[8] SkyGate's Washington Monument Ticket with Optional Walking Tour is timed entry to the observation deck, with a self-guided option and one that adds a small-group walk of the National Mall memorials first.[9] By contrast, the Park Service says the Lincoln Memorial chamber and exterior are free and open to the public, with tickets needed only for the Undercroft experience.[10] More in the Washington, DC memorials, tours and bikes guide.
Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. On its Independence National Historical Park page, the Park Service says no tickets are needed to see the Liberty Bell, while Independence Hall uses reservations and timed entry.[11] The one Philadelphia day trip from New York on XTOUR walks through the park past both, and SkyGate's listing says it includes transfers and a guide but no admissions.[12] XTOUR's reading: that tour gives you the outside of Independence Hall unless you hold your own timed entry. See day trips from New York City.
The USS Arizona Memorial. The National Park Service runs Pearl Harbor National Memorial, says its museums and grounds are free, and handles the USS Arizona Memorial programme through recreation.gov and a standby system.[13] Its visitor information page says reservations are strongly recommended and standby tickets are limited, and that backpacks, purses and camera bags are not permitted in the memorial or visitor center.[14] The Passport to Pearl Harbor sold on XTOUR lists an audio tour of the Arizona Memorial and Visitor Centre, the Battleship Missouri Memorial, and admission to the aviation museum and the submarine museum; its option does not name the Park Service's USS Arizona Memorial programme reservation.[15] Book the two separately. The Pearl Harbor tickets and tours guide explains what each paid ticket covers.
Reservations to enter or to park
Diamond Head. This is where a product listing and the managing agency disagreed. SkyGate's option for the Diamond Head State Monument Self-guided Hike sells an audio guide and map, excludes admission and says entry must be bought on site.[17] The Hawaii DLNR Division of State Parks says entry and parking reservations have been required for non-residents since 12 May 2022, with payment by credit card only.[16] Follow the state park's rule; it is the authority for its own gate. The Oahu passes, parks and Diamond Head guide covers the rest of the island's tickets.
Muir Woods. The National Park Service says parking reservations are required ahead of time.[18] That matters if you drive. The Muir Woods and Sausalito Tour from San Francisco starts in the city and crosses the Golden Gate Bridge, and SkyGate's price lists a guide, admission and National Park fees.[19] The Muir Woods and wine country day trips guide compares it with the second Muir Woods tour and the Armstrong Redwoods option further north, where Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods, the reserve's co-manager, says vehicles pay day-use fees and visitors on foot or by bicycle do not.[20]
Fees and passes that do not carry over
Not every landscape on XTOUR's day trips from Las Vegas follows national park rules, even when it sounds as if it should.
- Horseshoe Bend sits in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, but the National Park Service says parking there is a City of Page fee and NPS passes do not apply.[21]
- Valley of Fire State Park charges a day-use entrance fee per vehicle, according to Nevada State Parks, and SkyGate's inclusions for the guided hikes do not mention it.[23][22]
- Grand Canyon National Park tour: SkyGate's inclusions for the one tour on XTOUR do not list park entrance fees.[24] XTOUR has not verified whether they are covered.
- Grand Canyon West is a separate place with a separate operator: its own website says the resort corporation is owned and operated by the Hualapai Tribe in Peach Springs, Arizona.[25] The national park is run by the National Park Service.[26] The Grand Canyon and desert day trips from Las Vegas guide starts with that distinction.
Attractions that work the same way
Timed reservations are not only a public-land habit. The Empire State Building's operator says all visits require a timed reservation.[27] One Times Square's Skywalk operator says timed-entry tickets are required and there is no on-site box office.[28] The Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach says reservations are required on weekends and holidays.[29] None of this is unusual, but it does mean a ticket bought in advance is usually a time slot, not an open door. The New York observation decks compared guide covers the decks in detail.
Tour or independent visit?
XTOUR's reading of the evidence above gives three practical rules.
- Where one operator holds the concession, a tour is that operator's ticket plus extras. For Alcatraz and the Statue of Liberty, every route onto the island goes through the authorised ferry, so the choice is between that ferry alone and a product that adds a guide or a bundle.
- Where an agency runs a reservation system, check whether the product names it. The Pearl Harbor products did not name the USS Arizona programme, and the Diamond Head audio guide does not include entry. Assume you must reserve unless the listing says it is included.
- Where the reservation is for parking, check how the tour handles it. At Muir Woods the Park Service's requirement is a parking reservation; the tour above lists National Park fees among its inclusions, but XTOUR has not confirmed how its parking is arranged.
Before you go
- Check the managing agency's page close to your date; every rule here was read on 3 October 2026.
- Expect security screening for the Statue of Liberty ferries and the Washington Monument.[8][4]
- Leave bags behind at Pearl Harbor or budget for paid storage.[14]
- Carry a credit card for Diamond Head; the state park takes no cash.[16]

Frequently asked questions
Good to know
Can I visit Alcatraz on any San Francisco bay cruise?
No. The National Park Service said on 3 October 2026 that a ferry ticket from Alcatraz City Cruises is required to visit, and that it is the only NPS-authorised ferry and the only one permitted to dock and let passengers off on the island. No other ferry may dock there, so other bay cruises see the island from the water.
Does a Pearl Harbor tour ticket include the USS Arizona Memorial?
Not automatically. The National Park Service runs the USS Arizona Memorial programme through recreation.gov and a limited standby system, and none of the three Pearl Harbor products on XTOUR named that reservation when they were read on 3 October 2026. Reserve it with the Park Service if you want it.
Do I need a reservation for Diamond Head?
If you are not a Hawaii resident, yes. The Hawaii DLNR Division of State Parks says entry and parking reservations have been required for non-residents since 12 May 2022, with payment by credit card only. The audio-guide product XTOUR lists sells a guide and map, not park entry.
