Why go

Alcobaça Monastery is the Cistercian abbey of Santa Maria de Alcobaça, whose foundation and charter Museus e Monumentos de Portugal dates to 8 April 1153 under King Afonso Henriques, with construction begun in 1178; it is on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1989. The monastery's own site says the listing cites its medieval rooms (church, cloister, sacristy, chapter house, monks' hall, refectory and dormitory), the 18th-century kitchen and the Gothic tombs of King Pedro and Inês de Castro. It is managed by Museus e Monumentos de Portugal, which lists an online ticket office for it. It is in Alcobaça municipality, Leiria District.
