Why go

Óbidos Castle is the castle of the walled town of Óbidos together with the walls that ring the town. Óbidos Municipality lists the 'Castelo de Óbidos e Paço dos Alcaides' as a National Monument since 1910 and says the castle is attributed a Roman origin and was later a fortification under Arab rule. The Centre of Portugal tourism board says the town is encircled by medieval walls and crowned by the castle rebuilt by King Dinis, which is now a pousada, and that the town is entered through the southern gate of Santa Maria, decorated with 18th-century tiles. This record is the monument, not the pousada hotel that the castle now houses. Which stretches of the wall walk are open to visitors was not established from these pages.
