A limestone cave in the Arpa River gorge at Areni where excavators found a winemaking installation of about 4000 BC and a leather shoe dated to 3627–3377 BC.

Why go
UNESCO's tentative-list entry, added in 2026, describes the finds as the earliest archaeologically documented integrated winemaking installation — a grape-treading platform, fermentation vats and storage vessels — and the shoe as the oldest preserved footwear in Eurasia. The cave's stable conditions also kept rope, textiles, plant remains and food residues. Three main galleries run more than 40 metres into the cliff, the eastern one over 10 metres high at its entrance. Visits are ticketed. The cave sits at the start of the road to Noravank amid grape-growing villages, so it fits naturally into a day around Areni.
