The monument's official site describes a Renaissance castle in Touraine, built under the patronage of François I, and quotes Balzac calling it a faceted diamond set by the Indre. The site (read 2026-10-03) lists a temporary exhibition, Karen Knorr, running from 13 June to 1 November 2026, which is not part of the permanent description. The château is a separate identity from the commune of Azay-le-Rideau.
