Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira (Guimarães)

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira

The Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira is the church of the former Collegiate of Guimarães, on the Largo da Oliveira in the city's historic centre, next to the Gothic Padrão do Salado.

Why go

The Museu de Alberto Sampaio, which occupies former buildings of the collegiate, says on its history page that Countess Mumadona had a monastery built on the site in the 10th century, that it became a collegiate church early in the 12th century, and that King John I built a new church dedicated to Santa Maria de Guimarães, renewed in the 16th century and altered in later centuries. The museum says it was created in 1928 to house the art of the dissolved Collegiate of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira and of other churches and convents of Guimarães. Guimarães municipal tourism describes the church on the Largo da Oliveira with the Padrão do Salado, a Gothic porch commemorating Portuguese victories, and tells the legend of the olive tree that gave the dedication its name. This record is the church; the square, the Padrão do Salado and the museum are not it. No visiting or entry rule for the church was found on the pages read.
