Guimarães Castle

Castelo de Guimarães

Guimarães Castle is a medieval castle on the Monte Latito in Guimarães, first built in the mid-10th century by Countess Mumadona Dias and restored in the first half of the 20th century.

Why go

Museus e Monumentos de Portugal, which runs the castle, says on its ticket page that Countess Mumadona Dias had it built in the mid-10th century to defend the monastery of Santa Maria de Guimarães, that it later served as a jail and fell into ruin, and that it was restored in the first half of the 20th century, opened to the public in June 1940 and has been a National Monument since 1910. It presents the castle as a symbol of the origins of the nation and of Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal. On 9 October 2026 the same page said the keep (Torre de Menagem) was closed for rehabilitation, and that 'Acesso 52' free tickets for residents of Portugal are not issued online but only at a physical ticket office. The castle, the Church of São Miguel and the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza stand together on the Monte Latito; this record is the castle only.
