Church of the Acheiropoietos
Ιερός Ναός Παναγίας Αχειροποιήτου · Αχειροποίητος
The Church of the Acheiropoietos is a mid-5th-century three-aisled basilica on Agias Sofias Street in central Thessaloniki, north of the church of Hagia Sophia.
Why go
The Ministry of Culture's Odysseus page dates the basilica to around the middle of the 5th century and describes a three-aisled timber-roofed basilica with galleries, built over the ruins of a Roman bath, which keeps 5th-century mosaics and early 13th-century wall paintings. The same page says written sources call it the great church of the Theotokos, that the name Acheiropoietos is first recorded in a document of 1320, and that it was the first church converted into a mosque after the Ottoman capture of the city in 1430, known as Eski Cami. Visiting arrangements and service times are not given here.
