Collection de l'Art Brut

The Collection de l'Art Brut is a museum of art brut in Lausanne, founded on Jean Dubuffet's collection and housed since 1976 in the 18th-century Château de Beaulieu.

Why go

This record is the museum, not the Château de Beaulieu building that houses it. The museum's pages (in French) say Jean Dubuffet built up a collection of art brut, a term he coined in 1945, gave it to the City of Lausanne in 1971 (nearly 5,000 works by 133 creators), and that the municipal museum opened in 1976 in the Château de Beaulieu, a patrician house built between 1764 and 1776 and owned by the City. The museum describes art brut as work made by self-taught people outside artistic tradition, and shows part of its collection permanently alongside temporary exhibitions. Some guided tours require registration, according to the museum's agenda.
