Glasgow Necropolis
Cladh Mór Ghlaschu
The Glasgow Necropolis is a Victorian cemetery of 37 acres (15 ha) beside Glasgow Cathedral, on the eastern edge of Glasgow city centre, administered by Glasgow City Council.
Why go
The Friends of Glasgow Necropolis, a registered Scottish charity, say the cemetery was laid out on the Merchants' House's Fir Park, that the first burial took place in 1832, that 50,000 burials have taken place, and that in 1966 the Merchants' House gave it to Glasgow City Council, which now administers and maintains it. Their site says it was always intended to be interdenominational and has monuments designed by architects and sculptors including Alexander 'Greek' Thomson, Charles Rennie Mackintosh and J. T. Rochead. The Friends run free general walking tours, for which they say booking is essential. This record is the cemetery, not the Friends charity or the John Knox monument within it, and its map point is inside the grounds, not a gate.
