Château de Gruyères

Gruyères Castle is the castle of the Counts of Gruyère on a hill at Gruyères in the canton of Fribourg, now visited for its rooms, collections and exhibitions.

Why go

This record is the castle, not the castle's museum foundation as a separate item and not the town of Gruyères around it. The Fribourg Region tourism page (in French) says the castle has stood on a hill at the foot of the Fribourg Pre-Alps since the 13th century, and that its collections include medieval stained glass, Burgundian copes taken by the Confederates from Charles the Bold, murals commissioned by the bailiffs under the Ancien Régime, paintings by Camille Corot and the 19th-century troubadour decoration of the Knights' Hall, with temporary exhibitions as well. The same page says visitors can explore with a printed guide in 12 languages, that there are trails for children, and that guided tours are organised on request. It is in the municipality of Gruyères.
