Hoa Lư Ancient Capital

Cố đô Hoa Lư

The Hoa Lư ancient capital is the site of Vietnam's capital from 968 to 1010, in Tây Hoa Lư ward, Ninh Bình province; the Tràng An board says many of its relics lie within the Tràng An World Heritage complex.

Why go

The Tràng An board says Hoa Lư was the capital of Vietnam from 968 to 1010 under the Đinh, Early Lê and Lý dynasties, until King Lý Thái Tổ moved the capital to Thăng Long (Hà Nội) in 1010. It says later Lý, Trần, Lê and Nguyễn kings restored the site and added temples, tombs, communal houses and pagodas, and that many relics remain inside the Tràng An World Heritage complex. Vietnam's national tourism authority describes the old capital as a small city naturally protected by karsts and rivers. This record is the ancient capital area; the temple of King Đinh Tiên Hoàng inside it is a separate record. It is not the present-day Hoa Lư ward, the former provincial seat.
