Housesteads Roman Fort
Housesteads Roman Fort is the remains of a Roman fort midway along Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland, England, on the Whin Sill escarpment, owned by the National Trust and managed by English Heritage.
Why go
Housesteads is a Roman fort on Hadrian's Wall, built within a decade of AD 122, when work on the Wall began, and garrisoned by an infantry regiment until the end of the 4th century, according to English Heritage's history page. English Heritage says the fort is owned by the National Trust and managed by English Heritage, that National Trust members get free entry, and that an interactive exhibition tells the stories of the fort and its people. Its prices page says booking online until midnight the day before gives a discount, that tickets can still be bought on the day online or on arrival, and that tickets are valid all day. This record is the fort, not Hadrian's Wall as a whole.
