Arthur's Seat
Suidhe Artair
Arthur's Seat is the hill that rises above Holyrood Park in the centre of Edinburgh, the remains of an ancient volcano.
Why go
Arthur's Seat is the hill at the heart of Holyrood Park in Edinburgh, which Historic Environment Scotland lists among its places to visit and describes as dominated by Arthur's Seat. HES's history page says Arthur's Seat and the surrounding crags are the remains of a volcano that erupted around 340 million years ago and were later shaped by glaciers, and that Bronze Age agricultural terraces can still be seen on its eastern slopes when the sun is low. HES offers an audio guide to the park through the Geotourist app. This record is the hill, with its point at the summit; it is not Holyrood Park as a whole, the hillfort item of the same name or Samson's Ribs, and it gives no route to the top.
