A partly ruined monastery on a forested cliffside of the Debed canyon near Tumanyan, reached only on foot, where fragments of medieval frescoes survive in the main church.

Why go
The walk is part of the visit: there is no direct car access, and the national tourism site describes a hike of 15 to 20 minutes from the road. At the top, the partly preserved buildings include a church built in 1171 by Mariam, daughter of King Kyurike II, and a main church whose fresco remains show the Virgin and Child, archangels and communion scenes. A belfry-tomb of 1279 carries a Georgian inscription and was restored in 2012–2014, and a large refectory stands to the north-west. It suits travellers comfortable with a hike to a partly restored ruin; anyone wanting an easy stop should choose Odzun instead.
Getting there
No direct access by car; the monastery is reached on foot by a 15–20 minute hike from the Vanadzor–Alaverdi highway.
