Why go
Lake Çıldır lies on the border of Ardahan and Kars provinces in north-eastern Türkiye, at about 1,959 m. According to the Ardahan Governorship, it freezes in late November, the ice grows thicker than a metre, and it stays frozen until early April; the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's Kültür Portalı describes ice fishing through holes in the ice. It is an Important Bird Area. The Ardahan Governorship has built a shoreline recreation area with parking and kiosks, but XTOUR has not located it. Official sources disagree on the lake's area and depth, so no figure is given here. Ice conditions change: in February 2026 the Governorship cancelled the lake's ice festival because the ice was thawing.
Getting there
The map point is the middle of the lake, not a place to arrive; no official visitor point was located. The Kars provincial culture directorate's getting-there page lists the lake about 65 km from Kars and a free municipal vehicle from outside the Kars Governorship building at 10:30, returning at 15:30; XTOUR has not verified that the service is current. Going onto the ice depends entirely on current conditions.
