Lake Toba

Danau Toba

Lake Toba (Danau Toba) is the volcanic caldera lake in the Bukit Barisan highlands of North Sumatra, with Samosir Island in its middle.

Why go

This record is the lake, not Samosir Island, the Toba Caldera geopark designation or the Lake Toba tourism authority. The North Sumatra provincial government's tourism page describes it as a volcanic lake in the Bukit Barisan mountains at about 900 metres above sea level, thought to have formed in an eruption of the Toba supervolcano about 74,000 years ago, and calls it one of the province's tourism icons. The same page says Samosir Island lies in the middle of the lake, with old stone tombs and villages of traditional Batak Toba houses. XTOUR states nothing about ferries, boats or which shore town to stay in.
