Why go
The Matterhorn Museum – Zermatlantis is a museum in the village of Zermatt about the history of the village and the first ascent of the Matterhorn. Zermatt Tourism's museum page says its underground world shows Zermatt's original houses and how the inhabitants lived in the 19th century, has a multimedia room, and displays original objects from the first ascent of 1865, including the broken rope; four of the seven climbers lost their lives. It also shows 'Theo', a 16th-century mercenary who failed to cross the Theodul Pass. Zermatt Tourism's Gorner Glacier trail page adds that the museum displays mountain reliefs showing the glaciers around Zermatt.
