Why go
The Gorner Glacier is a valley glacier in the mountains above Zermatt; this record is the glacier, not the Gornergrat viewpoint above it or the gorge below. Zermatt Tourism's theme-trail page says the glacier has retreated by over 3,000 metres in the last 150 years and reached its greatest extent between 1859 and 1865, and earlier in 1667 and 1385, and that a marked trail with information boards leads from Furi to the rugged terrain of the lower glacier. The same page expressly advises against going towards the glacier tongue alone and says anyone wishing to get closer to the glacier must hire a mountain guide. Gornergrat Bahn names the Gorner Glacier in the 360-degree view from the Gornergrat. The record's point lies inside the glacier's outline and is not a place to go to.
