Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe

Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas

The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, which its foundation describes as Germany's central Holocaust memorial, is a field of concrete stelae designed by Peter Eisenman with an underground Information Centre, at Cora-Berliner-Straße in Berlin's Mitte district.

Why go

The Foundation Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe describes the memorial as a place of remembrance and commemoration for the up to six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust; it was officially opened on 10 May 2005 and consists of the Field of Stelae designed by Peter Eisenman and the underground Information Centre. The foundation says the field holds 2,710 concrete stelae on a gently lowered site of about 19,000 square metres that can be entered from all four sides. The exhibition in the Information Centre documents the persecution and extermination of the Jews of Europe and the historical sites of the crimes. The foundation says entry to the Information Centre is through a security check, that bags larger than hand luggage and suitcases may not be taken in, and that registered groups have precedence, so individual visitors may have to wait. This record is the memorial with its Information Centre, not the foundation.
