Reichstag Building

Reichstagsgebäude

The Reichstag Building is the German Bundestag's parliament building on Platz der Republik in Berlin's Mitte district; its dome and roof terrace can be visited after registering with the Bundestag.

Why go

The Bundestag's own dome page (in German, translated here) says the dome and roof terrace of the Reichstag Building can be visited only with prior registration, made by online form, fax or post but not by telephone, and that each visitor's surname, first name and date of birth are needed. For short-notice visits it says the Visitors' Service point on Platz der Republik in front of the building issues personal admission passes, when places are free, up to two hours ahead or for the following two days, and that visitors aged 16 and over must show a valid official photo ID there. The dome visit is self-guided, and the Bundestag offers an audio guide on the roof terrace in twelve languages. Its English visitor information says bags and coats are X-rayed, visitors pass metal detectors, and large luggage may not be taken into the building, with no storage on site; guided tours of the building are held in weeks when Parliament is not sitting, and the Bundestag asks that they be booked in writing well in advance. This record is the building, not the Bundestag as an institution.
