Neues Museum

The Neues Museum is a museum of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin on Museum Island in Berlin's Mitte district, showing Egyptian art, prehistoric and early historic finds and classical antiquities in a restored 19th-century building.

Why go

The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin say the Neues Museum building was designed by Friedrich August Stüler and built from 1843 to 1855, was severely damaged in the Second World War, and was restored from 2003 by the office of David Chipperfield, which kept the scars of the war visible instead of patching them over. The museum reopened in 2009 and combines exhibits from three collections: the Ägyptisches Museum und Papyrussammlung, the Museum für Vor- und Frühgeschichte and the Antikensammlung. Its permanent exhibitions include Ancient Egypt, with the bust of Queen Nefertiti, and prehistory and early history. The museum's visit page gives the visitor entrance as the James-Simon-Galerie on Bodestraße, and its tickets page says day tickets are sold at the ticket counter or online and recommends booking online in advance to avoid queuing. This record is the museum, not Museum Island as a whole.
