Altes Museum

The Altes Museum is Karl Friedrich Schinkel's Neoclassical museum building by the Lustgarten on Museum Island in Berlin's Mitte district, completed in 1830, where the Antikensammlung shows Greek, Etruscan and Roman art.

Why go

The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin say Karl Friedrich Schinkel's Altes Museum was completed in 1830, with eighteen Ionic fluted columns and a rotunda lined with antique sculptures that refers explicitly to Rome's Pantheon. The inscription on its portico records that Friedrich Wilhelm III dedicated the museum in 1828 to the study of all antiquities and the free arts. Today it houses the Antikensammlung (Collection of Classical Antiquities) with a permanent exhibition on the art and culture of the Greeks, Etruscans and Romans, complemented by ancient coins from the Münzkabinett. The museum's visit page gives the visitor entrance as Am Lustgarten, and its tickets page says day tickets are sold at the ticket counter or online and recommends booking online in advance. This record is the museum, not the Lustgarten in front of it.
