Mercado da Ribeira
Mercado da Ribeira
The Mercado da Ribeira is the market hall on Avenida 24 de Julho at Cais do Sodré in Lisbon, a market for food and other goods that also houses the Time Out Market Lisboa food hall.
Why go
The Misericórdia parish council describes the Mercado da Ribeira as a market for food and other goods at Cais do Sodré, opened on 1 January 1882 and remodelled and enlarged several times; it says the market gave up wholesale trade in 2000 but kept its retail trade, and that a new first floor opened in 2001 added social, cultural and recreational uses. The parish's listing for the market gives separate entries for a traditional market, florists, collectors and the Time Out concession. Time Out Market Lisboa, the food hall created by Time Out Portugal, says it is located in the Mercado da Ribeira and opened in 2014, and Visit Lisboa places it on the market's ground floor. The food hall is a business inside the building, not this record. Wikidata classes the market as a marketplace and as cultural heritage, and gives its heritage status as 'Included in protected site'.
