National Tile Museum
Museu Nacional do Azulejo
The National Tile Museum (Museu Nacional do Azulejo) is Portugal's national museum of azulejo tiles, housed in the former Madre de Deus convent in Lisbon.
Why go
The Museu Nacional do Azulejo is the national museum of the azulejo, the Portuguese glazed tile, and Visit Lisboa says its collections trace the history of tile from the 15th century to the present. It occupies the former Madre de Deus convent, which Visit Lisboa says Queen Leonor founded in 1509, and whose church it describes as decorated with gilded carving, paintings and tile panels. Wikidata keeps the museum (Q2313815) apart from the convent building (Q11156794); this record is the museum. When this record was researched on 9 October 2026, the museum's home page said it was closed for works under Portugal's Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) and Visit Lisboa's page carried a 'Closed for renovations' notice, so check the museum's site for its reopening before planning a visit.
