Peneda-Gerês National Park

Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês

Peneda-Gerês National Park is a protected area of granite mountains in northern Portugal, taking in the Peneda, Soajo, Amarela and Gerês mountains between the Mourela and Castro Laboreiro plateaus.

Why go

ICNF, the national nature conservation institute, describes the park on its Natural.PT portal as covering 69,594.48 hectares from the Mourela to the Castro Laboreiro plateaus, including the Peneda, Soajo, Amarela and Gerês mountains. It notes woods, peatlands and wet meadows, 235 vertebrate species, and cultural heritage that includes megalithic necropolises, castles, granaries and mountain villages. The portal lists named entrances to the park, among them Lamas de Mouro, Mezio, Entre ambos-Rios, Covide, Rio Caldo, Fafião, Paradela and Sezelhe, and mentions interpretation centres and information posts at its gates. This record is the national park as an area; its villages, dams and trails are not it, and Braga, where the park's headquarters are, lies outside it.
