Schmittenhöhe

Schmittenhöhe

The Schmittenhöhe is a mountain in the Kitzbühel Alps west of Zell am See in the state of Salzburg, with a lift-served summit area run by the Schmittenhöhebahn company.

Why go

The Schmittenhöhe is the mountain above the town of Zell am See, which the regional tourism board calls Zell's local mountain, reached by the Schmittenhöhebahn cable car from near the lakeside. Its lifts are run by Schmittenhöhebahn AG, whose summit exhibition at the top station, 'Tradition & Innovation since 1927', traces the company's history from its first cable car in 1927; the company says it now has 28 cable cars and lifts. The tourism board describes the view from the summit over the town, Lake Zell and more than 30 mountains over 3,000 metres. Wikidata places the mountain in both Viehhofen and Zell am See, and the summit lies just outside the Zell am See boundary in OpenStreetMap, so the town is treated as a base for it, not as containing it. This record is the mountain and its summit, not the ski area or the lifts.
