Hohe Tauern National Park
Nationalpark Hohe Tauern
Hohe Tauern National Park is a protected high-mountain area of 1,856 km² spread over the Austrian states of Salzburg, Carinthia and Tyrol.
Why go
Hohe Tauern National Park covers 1,856 km² of high mountains across Salzburg, Carinthia and Tyrol; its management's facts page divides it into a 1,213 km² core zone and a 643 km² outer zone, and gives a height range from 1,000 metres to 3,798 metres at the Grossglockner. The same page says the park was created by state laws in Carinthia in 1981, Salzburg in 1984 and Tyrol in 1992, and that the IUCN recognised it as a Category II national park in 2001 (Carinthia) and 2006 (Salzburg and Tyrol). The park's home page says national park rangers guide visitors and that it runs interactive exhibitions in Mittersill, Mallnitz and Matrei. This record is the park as an area: its pin is a point inside the park, not a visitor centre or an entrance.
