Joseph Stalin Museum

იოსებ სტალინის სახელმწიფო მუზეუმი · Stalin Museum · Joseph Stalin State Museum

A museum complex in central Gori built around the small house where Joseph Stalin was born, with a main exhibition building opened in 1957 and his personal railway carriage displayed alongside.

Why go

Six halls follow Stalin's life in order, from his early years to the post-war period, through photographs, documents, gifts sent to him, a reproduction of the office he used from 1918 to 1922 and a copy of his death mask; the collection runs to about 40,000 items. A section on the period of repression was added in 2010. The birth house became a memorial museum in 1937, during Stalin's lifetime, and much of the main exhibition keeps its Soviet-era presentation. It suits travellers interested in twentieth-century history, and Gori Fortress, on its hill in the same town, makes an easy second stop.
