Stone Bridge (Regensburg)
Steinerne Brücke
The Stone Bridge (Steinerne Brücke) is the medieval stone arch bridge across the Danube in Regensburg, begun in 1135.
Why go
This record is the bridge, not the bridge tower at its city end or the buildings beside it. Regensburg's tourism board says construction began in 1135, that the bridge spans the river for about 300 metres on stone round arches resting on sixteen piers, and that until 1935 it was the only reliable crossing of the Danube in Regensburg and the surrounding area. The board says the bridge was originally guarded by three towers, of which the bridge tower on the city side survives, and that the figure of the Bruckmandl sits on its highest point, looking towards the cathedral.
