Takhti-Tepa Mud Volcanoes

ტახტი-თეფას ტალახის ვულკანები · Takhti-Tepha mud volcanoes · Takhti-Tepha Natural Monument

A small field of active mud volcanoes south of the Dali reservoir in Dedoplistskaro Municipality, Kakheti, where vents push up mud, oil and gas beside a short path in a protected natural monument.

Why go

Takhti-Tepa is a field of bubbling mud craters and small open vents that the Agency of Protected Areas describes as constantly active, erupting mud, oil and gas. The protected core is about one hectare within a 9.7-hectare natural monument south of the Dali reservoir, and a half-kilometre path, around 30 minutes, covers it. The site is managed by the Vashlovani Protected Areas Administration but lies well outside Vashlovani National Park itself. The APA gives the approach as about an hour from Dedoplistskaro, on gravel to the Dali reservoir and then about 15 km of dirt road.

Getting there

The Agency of Protected Areas states that visiting the boundary territories of the Vashlovani Protected Areas, including Takhti-Tepa, requires registering at the Vashlovani Protected Areas Visitor Center, 5 Baratashvili Street, Dedoplistskaro, and carrying a copy of an identity document, and that these territories can be visited only by off-road vehicle (apa.gov.ge, checked 2026-10-01). From Dedoplistskaro the APA gives about an hour: gravel to the Dali reservoir, then about 15 km of dirt road, then a 0.5 km path.
