Why go

The Vizcaya Bridge (Bizkaia Zubia, also called the Puente Colgante) is a transporter bridge over the mouth of the estuary below Bilbao, linking Portugalete and Getxo; it is not in the municipality of Bilbao. Its operator, El Transbordador de Vizcaya S.L., says it was designed by Alberto Palacio, opened on 28 July 1893, and was built to join the two banks without blocking shipping. The operator's service page says its main activity is carrying passengers and vehicles between the two banks, and its site sells separate, dated tickets for the upper walkway (the Pasarela). The operator's World Heritage page says UNESCO declared the bridge World Heritage on 13 July 2006.
