Why go

The Zugspitze is a mountain in the Wetterstein range on the German-Austrian border, and Wikidata lists it under both countries; its lift operator, the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn Bergbahn AG, gives its height as 2,962 metres. The operator's pages describe its three lifts: the cogwheel railway from Garmisch-Partenkirchen via Grainau and Lake Eibsee to the Zugspitzplatt at about 2,600 metres, the Gletscherbahn cable car from the plateau to the summit, and the Cable car Zugspitze between the Eibsee valley station and the summit. The same pages mention the golden summit cross, the glacier on the Zugspitzplatt and the Maria Heimsuchung chapel, reached on foot from the plateau. This record is the mountain itself, not the railway, the cable cars, the ski area or the summit station. Lift operating times and closures are set by the operator and are not given here.
