Weather & seasons

When to visit Stepantsminda

Stepantsminda has a high mountain climate. Summers are mild rather than hot, nights stay cool and afternoon cloud or storms can develop quickly. Winters are cold and snowy. Conditions change sharply with elevation: Gergeti, Juta, high passes and glaciers may experience winter-like conditions while the town itself is clear.

Best time

June to September is the easiest period for hiking, Juta, Truso Valley and high mountain excursions. May and October can be beautiful but snow, mud and rapidly changing weather may restrict higher routes. Winter is striking and much quieter, but road, avalanche and snow conditions become much more important. Stepantsminda is a mountain destination at about 1,740 metres, so nights can feel cold even during summer.
